Installing and Licensing IDL on PPPL PC's

To set up an IDL license on a Windows system with its own local copy of IDL, perform the steps below. Note that this will not work from offsite without firewall authentication. (This has been tested under Windows 2000 and Windows XP with IDL 6.0.)

The user can see if the desired version is on our FTP site , or download it from Exelis.

NOTE: The licensing for IDL 8.3 and above needs to be on a Red Hat 6 system so set your environmental variable LM_LICENSE_FILE on your PC or Mac to "1700@cirrus.pppl.gov" if "1700@flexlmsrv.pppl.gov" does not work. If you want to run IDL 8.3 on a Linux system, it has to be at least Red Hat 6, as well (e.g., as of May, 2014, you would need to login to portalr6). Older versions of IDL can run on Red Hat 5 or higher.
